Fethullah Gulen's Views
Turkish intellectuals and scholars acknowledge, either tacitly or explicitly, that he is one of the most serious and important thinkers and writers, and among the wisest activists of twentieth-century Turkey or even of the Muslim world.
If we do not plant the seeds of love in the hearts of young people, whom we try to revive through science, knowledge, and modern culture, they will never attain moral perfection
Relief & Healthcare Organizations
Gulen movement aims to create a real and lasting change for people in need all over the world by extending a helping hand to them regardless of their race, religion or color.
The Broken Jug
Droplets of Wisdom from the Heart
The "Broken Jug" is a metaphor taken from the poetry of Rumi. It evokes the gifts of love and service which, originating in God's grace, gradually trickle out to others and ultimately back to God through the vessel of a humble faithful heart.
On Life, Knowledge, and Belief
The Fountain is a composition from which our inner calling echoes, a reflection of what is not always visible to the eye, or a response to the yearning deep in the heart and mind which sometimes finds its definition best expressed in a poem, and at other times in a journey into outer space or through the veins of the human body.
Gülen MovementIn every local circle in which I interviewed, members expressed their trust in how their donations were being used. Repeatedly, interviewees said they never worried how their money was being used because they know it is being well spent.
EducationIn many parts of the world, the quality of education provided by Gulen schools is relatively high, especially in the field of physical sciences where high technology laboratories and computer rooms are provided. Perhaps shedding more light on the educational philosophy of Gulen is appropriate here. There has not been one particular ideology promoted within the Gulen educational philosophy.
DemocracyIn Gulen's approach to Islam, there is no place for a political organization. He is strongly against using services (Hizmet) as a means to gain worldly or political benefits. Gulen advocates understanding Islam as a religion with its basic precepts within the immutable framework.
PeacebuildingMore specifically, the following are some channels through which Hizmet instills, disseminates and popularises its core teachings among the wider Muslim public. Where the work is religious in nature, then Hizmet’s views and core teachings are popularised directly by way of its content. Where the content of the work is not religious, the core teachings are indirectly communicated through the example of the values that underpin that work.
HumanismHumans, the greatest mirror of the names, attributes and deeds of God, are a shining mirror, a marvelous fruit of life, a source for the whole universe, a sea that appears to be a tiny drop, a sun formed as a humble seed, a great melody in spite of their insignificant physical positions, and the source for existence all contained within a small body. Humans carry a holy secret that makes them equal to the entire universe with all their wealth of character; a wealth that can be developed to excellence.
What profoundly impresses me is Fethullah Gulen's visionary leadership, and unswerving dedication to the cause of interfaith dialogue as a catalyst for tolerance, understanding, and respect between the world's religions.
I have read several of Mr. Fethullah Gulen's books, and there is no way to mistake his message of religious reconciliation, mutual tolerance, and respect for all faiths. His charge to all nations and faith communities to reach out to each other in love is consistent, has never wavered, and represents a moderate Islam of peace, not violence. His words, to me, are a Turkish equivalent to the words of our country's Martin Luther King.
Fethullah Gulen is a contemporary Turkish social and political philosopher. His preaching, teaching and writing over the years has sought to articulate the essence of Islam in its broadest self-definition. Fethullah Gulen views Islam as an ideal platform from which Muslims can and should engage a diverse world inhabitated by diverse peoples and diverse forms of faith. He envisions a world in which different peoples and different religious traditions interact with mutual respect and mutual affection.
Gulen's sense that the realm of science and technology and the realm of spirituality are complementary realms, and that humanity fares best when we work to join faith to modernity (rather than fleeing faith in pursuit of modernity) recalls Einstein's writing on science and religion. The pre-eminent physicist of the last century and one of the pre-eminent philosophers of this century share a conviction that a marriage between the description of what is in the world and the prescription of what should be in the world of human beings--all human beings, of whatever faith or color or ethnicity or gender--offers the means to guide all of us to a richer future.
